The surrounding territory encloses a big open air museum. In this land flourishing with nature you can find the heritage of ancient civilizations, from the Etruscans to the Middle Ages.

SORANO (7 Km) www.comune.sorano.gr.it

Above the river Lente Sorano is build on a huge rock of tufo. The village dates back to the Middle Ages and is fortified with the great Fortezza Orsini, after the name of the old noble family that governed it; its bell tower still marks the hours of this ancient village. Close by in the countryside, there are the Terme di Sorano (thermal springs).

 

SOVANA (9 Km) www.sovana.it

This village is like a gem among the hills, precious with medieval and Renaissance buidings, such as Palazzo Pretorio, Rocca Aldobrandesca, Saint Mary’s Church. Just outside the village you can visit the best preserved Etruscan tombs of the area.
In this area you can walk along the famous “Vie cave” , sort of very old passages dug in the tufo, originally they led to the ancient cemeteries, then they became important communication routes.

 

VITOZZA (7 Km) ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE
Generally considered the most ancient rupestrian settlement of Central Italy with its 200 caves of various shape and size, Vitozza is the ideal place where the natural and the human have reached a perfect symbiosis. The area preserves also ancient Roman colombarii (1st century B.C.).

 

PITIGLIANO (10 Km) www.comune.pitigliano.gr.it

This small city is build upon a hill of tufo that made it impregnable until firearms were used. The most enchanting moment to stare at the city is sunset. The centre is separated by three main streets and hundreds of mysterious alleys. History has left its mark in this small city: Etruscan necropolis, the walls, medieval and Renaissance buildings, the Synagogue and the Jews cemetery. Since the 16th century an important Jew community has lived in Pitigliano, that was nicknamed “Little Jerusalem” at the end of the 19th century.

Ancient thermal springs are an important meeting point also for famous people.

LAGO BOLSENA (36 Km)
Very busy in the summer, the lake is a beloved target for many Europeans, especially English people.
